What does “aconsejar” mean in English?

  1. to advise, to recommend

to advise, to recommend (aconsejar a alguien que)

Example sentences

  • Te aconsejo que llegues temprano a la entrevista.

I advise you to arrive early for the interview.

  • El médico le aconsejó que dejara de fumar.

The doctor advised him to stop smoking.

  • Os aconsejo estudiar el tema con calma.

I advise you to study the topic calmly.

How to use it

Aconsejar means 'to advise' and is a subjunctive-trigger verb at B1. The pattern is aconsejar a alguien que + present subjunctive (for current/future advice) or imperfect subjunctive (for hypothetical advice). It can also take an infinitive when the subject of both clauses is the same: te aconsejo descansar.

Common mistake

Aconsejar always needs an indirect object pronoun (me, te, le, nos) to identify who is being advised. Omitting it ('aconsejo que llegues') sounds incomplete — say 'te aconsejo que llegues'.
