How to use it

Ignorar means 'to ignore' (deliberately pay no attention) or 'to be unaware of/not know' (a false friend trap). At B2, both senses are active: 'ignorar a alguien' = to ignore someone deliberately; 'ignoro si es cierto' = I don't know whether it is true. The second sense (not knowing) is a partial false friend with English 'ignore'. Key collocations: ignorar las advertencias (ignore warnings), ignorar por completo (ignore completely), se ignora si... (it is not known whether...).

Common mistake

False friend alert: 'ignorar' can mean 'not to know', unlike English 'ignore' which only means 'deliberately disregard'. 'Ignoro su paradero' = I don't know his whereabouts (not: I'm ignoring his whereabouts). Context disambiguates, but learners coming from English often miss the 'not know' sense entirely.
