How to use it
El/la inmigrante (noun, common gender) refers to a person who has moved to a new country with the intention of settling there. Key collocations: integración de inmigrantes; segunda generación de inmigrantes; inmigrante irregular/legal; flujo de inmigrantes. Distinguish from emigrante (a person who leaves their country) and refugiado (refugee — fleeing persecution). Note: in Latin American Spanish, migrante is more widely used than inmigrante as a neutral term.
Common mistake
Inmigrante (into a country) ≠ emigrante (out of a country) — the English 'immigrant' and 'emigrant' distinction maps directly onto these. Inmigrado/a exists but is less common. Do not say *inmigrado for the common noun form — inmigrante is standard. Refugiado implies legal status under international law and should not be substituted for inmigrante.
