ir

verbCEFR A1High frequency

What does “ir” mean in English?

  1. to go

Example sentences

  • Voy a la escuela.

    I'm going to school.

  • Vamos a comer.

    Let's eat / We're going to eat.

  • ¿A dónde vas?

    Where are you going?

How to use it

Ir means 'to go'. Highly irregular: voy, vas, va, vamos, vais, van. Combines with a + place ('voy a Madrid') and a + infinitive ('voy a comer' = I'm going to eat).

Common mistake

Ir always takes 'a' for destination — 'voy A Madrid', not 'voy en Madrid' or 'voy Madrid'. The construction ir+a+infinitive is the immediate future.
