How to use it
Polémico means 'controversial' or 'contentious' — a topic, measure, or statement that generates strong disagreement. It always implies that two (or more) well-founded positions exist and clash. Common collocations: un tema polémico, una decisión muy polémica, un debate polémico. The noun is la polémica ('the controversy', 'the dispute'). Note: polémico is stronger than discutible (debatable) and less extreme than escandaloso. Very high frequency in journalism and formal debate at B2+.
Common mistake
Polémico does not mean 'polemical' in the English rhetorical sense (aggressively argumentative). It simply means 'controversial' — generating disagreement, not necessarily bad faith. The English cognate 'polemical' implies combative intent; polémico does not. Also: la polémica (noun) is the controversy itself, not a polemicist. Don't confuse with controvertido (also 'controversial', more formal register).
