How to use it
Preguntarse means 'to wonder' or 'to ask oneself'. It is always reflexive: me pregunto si... (I wonder if...), los expertos se preguntan por qué... (experts wonder why...). It introduces genuine open reflection — uncertainty, curiosity, or philosophical questioning. The difference from preguntar (to ask someone else) is fundamental: preguntarse = internal questioning; preguntar = external question directed at another. At B2, it is essential in analytical writing, opinion pieces, and debate.
Common mistake
Preguntarse (reflexive: wonder) vs. preguntar (transitive: ask someone). Never use preguntar for 'I wonder' — that would mean you are asking someone a question. Me pregunto si is a natural academic hedge: 'one wonders whether', 'it is worth asking whether'. The si clause takes indicative when the question is open; subjunctive would change the meaning.
