How to use it
Presupuestar means 'to budget', 'to estimate the cost of', or 'to draw up a budget for'. It derives from presupuesto (budget/estimate). In formal business and project management contexts: presupuestar los gastos (budget for expenses), presupuestar un proyecto (cost a project). In everyday contexts, a plumber or builder presupuesta (gives a quote/estimate). Two senses: (1) to allocate budget to something (presupuestar 5 millones para el proyecto) and (2) to provide a cost estimate (el fontanero me presupuestó la obra).
Common mistake
Presupuestar (to budget/cost) vs. presupuesto (noun: budget/estimate) — both are essential at B2. The phrase un presupuesto (a quote/estimate from a tradesperson) is very common in everyday Spanish: 'me han dado tres presupuestos para arreglar el tejado'. Don't confuse presupuestar with prever (to forecast/anticipate) — presupuestar is specifically about assigning monetary value.
