How to use it
El tema (noun, masculine) means 'subject, topic, matter' — a central subject being discussed, studied, or addressed. Core B2 collocations: el tema principal; un tema polémico/delicado; cambiar de tema; salirse del tema; el tema de + noun; abordar/tratar un tema. The verb is tratar (un tema). Distinguish from asunto (affair/matter — more specific business), cuestión (question/issue — with more uncertainty), and materia (subject matter — academic).
Common mistake
El tema (topic/subject) vs. la materia (subject as a school course, or matter/substance). 'Off topic' = fuera del tema / sin venir al caso. 'On the subject of...' = en cuanto al tema de / respecto al tema de. 'Taboo subject' = tema tabú.
