y

conjunctionCEFR A1

What does “y” mean in English?

  1. and

and (joining nouns, adjectives, or verbs)

Example sentences

  • Me gusta el café y el té.

    I like coffee and tea.

  • Ella es inteligente y simpática.

    She is intelligent and nice.

  • Trabajo y estudio todos los días.

I work and study every day.

How to use it

y means 'and' and is used to connect two nouns, adjectives, verbs, or clauses of equal weight — exactly as in English. One phonological rule to learn: y changes to e before a word that starts with the sound /i/ (spelled i or hi), to avoid two vowel sounds clashing: padre e hijo (father and son), not padre y hijo.

Common mistake

English speakers often write a comma before 'y' in lists ('pan, queso, y leche') by analogy with the English serial comma. Spanish omits it: 'pan, queso y leche'.
