Construction: dejar en el aire + noun (dejar en el aire la cuestión, dejar en el aire la decisión) or quedarse en el aire (reflexive: the matter itself is left unresolved). Contrast with zanjar (to settle a matter definitively) and dejar pendiente (to leave pending, more neutral).
Common mistake
Dejar en el aire ≠ dejar en paz (to leave alone). Dejar en el aire specifically describes an unresolved question or arrangement. The reflexive form quedarse en el aire means the thing itself remains unresolved. Don't use for physical objects left in the air (floating) — the expression is always metaphorical for unresolved matters.
