How to use it
Desvanecerse means 'to fade', 'to dissolve', or 'to vanish'. It is a reflexive intransitive verb. At B2 it describes abstract things disappearing gradually: la esperanza se desvaneció, el optimismo se va desvaneciendo, las ilusiones se desvanecen. It is also used for physical phenomena (fog, colour fading, a person fainting — se desvaneció = she fainted). At B2 the figurative sense (abstract disappearance) is the primary learning target. Don't confuse with desaparecer (to disappear — neutral, used for objects, people, and abstract things) — desvanecerse implies a gradual dissolution rather than a sudden absence.
Common mistake
Desvanecerse is reflexive — never *desvanece sin pronombre. The gradual sense is typically conveyed with ir + gerund: se fue desvaneciendo (was gradually fading). Don't confuse with disiparse (to dissipate — used for fog, doubts, crowds dispersing) or apagarse (to go out — light, enthusiasm). Desvanecerse covers both physical fainting and metaphorical dissolution — context separates them.
