How to use it
Surgir means 'to arise', 'to emerge', or 'to come up'. It refers to something that appears or comes into existence, often unexpectedly: surgen problemas (problems arise), surgió una oportunidad (an opportunity arose), surgió la idea de... (the idea came up / emerged). It is intransitive — nothing is done to it by an agent. Frequently used in formal contexts to describe the emergence of issues, complications, opportunities, or phenomena. Key contrast: aparecer (to appear/show up, more visual) vs. surgir (to emerge/arise, more abstract/conceptual).
Common mistake
Surgir is intransitive and cannot take a direct object — you cannot 'surgir something'. Compare: 'el problema surgió' (the problem arose) vs. 'surgió el problema' (the problem emerged — word order variation for focus). Don't confuse with levantarse (to get up/stand up, physical) or aparecer (to appear visually). A surge in English is different — in Spanish, surgir means to emerge, not to increase rapidly (that would be dispararse or aumentar bruscamente).
