How to use it

Ingresar (dinero) means 'to deposit money (into an account)' — this is one of several meanings of ingresar in Spanish. At B1 learners must distinguish: ingresar dinero (banking deposit), ingresar en el hospital (to be admitted to hospital), and ingresar en una organización (to join). In banking, it is always ingresar + amount + en + account: 'Ingresé mil euros en mi cuenta'. The act of depositing is called el ingreso.

Common mistake

English speakers often say 'depositar' — this exists but sounds Latin American or overly technical in Spain; ingresar is the standard Peninsular banking verb. The hospital sense of ingresar has exactly the same form, so context is essential: 'Ingresaron al paciente' (hospital) vs 'Ingresé el dinero' (bank).
