How to use it
Mientras que is a conjunction meaning 'whereas' or 'while' in a contrastive (not temporal) sense. It directly links two contrasting clauses without requiring a semicolon or full stop. Contrast with mientras (without que), which is temporal ('while something is happening'). Mientras que is strictly contrastive. Both clauses use indicative when stating facts.
Common mistake
The most common error is using mientras que when a temporal 'while' is intended: 'Mientras como, escucho música' (While I eat, I listen to music) requires mientras alone, not mientras que. Mientras que is exclusively contrastive. Also: mientras que joins two full clauses directly (no semicolon needed, unlike sin embargo or en cambio).
