no entiendo

verbCEFR A1

What does “no entiendo” mean in English?

  1. I don't understand

Example sentences

  • Perdón, no entiendo.

    Sorry, I don't understand.

  • No entiendo la pregunta.

    I don't understand the question.

  • No entiendo nada.

    I don't understand anything.

How to use it

No entiendo means 'I don't understand'. Present tense of entender (e→ie stem-changing): yo entiendo, tú entiendes, etc. The negative no goes before the verb.

Common mistake

Spanish requires double negation: 'no entiendo NADA' (not 'no entiendo algo'). The 'no' before the verb stays, and nada / nadie / nunca after the verb.
