o

conjunctionCEFR A1

What does “o” mean in English?

  1. or

or (linking two alternatives or options)

Example sentences

  • ¿Comes en casa o en el trabajo?

Do you eat at home or at work?

  • ¿Es un gato o un perro?

Is it a cat or a dog?

  • Puedo ir hoy o mañana.

I can go today or tomorrow.

How to use it

"o" means "or" and connects two alternatives. It works exactly like English "or" in simple yes/no questions and choices. Note: before a word beginning with o- or ho-, Spanish uses "u" instead of "o" to avoid a clash of sounds (e.g. siete u ocho), but "o" is the default form English speakers need first.

Common mistake

English speakers sometimes write "o" with an accent (ó) between numerals (e.g. 3 ó 4) to distinguish it from the digit zero — but modern Spanish spelling no longer requires this accent; write plain "o" in all contexts.
