It is a near-perfect cognate of English 'platform'. It is feminine: la plataforma. It contrasts with aplicación (the individual app installed on a device) and with red social (a social network specifically). One plataforma can host many aplicaciones. In non-digital contexts plataforma means a physical platform (train platform: andén is more common; speaker's platform: estrado), but the digital sense dominates in B1 media-and-technology contexts.
