Ponerse de acuerdo means 'to reach an agreement', 'to come to an agreement', or 'to agree on something'. It describes the process of arriving at agreement, whereas estar de acuerdo means 'to be in agreement' (a state). The structure is ponerse de acuerdo (on something: en algo, sobre algo) or ponerse de acuerdo para + infinitive (to agree to do something) or ponerse de acuerdo en que + subjunctive (when agreement concerns a future or hypothetical action). It requires a plural or group subject unless an indirect object marks the other party.
Common mistake
Do not use '*acordar' for mutual agreement between people in informal speech — acordar exists but is more formal and often takes a different structure. The key contrast: ponerse de acuerdo (process of reaching agreement) vs estar de acuerdo (state of being in agreement). Say estamos de acuerdo (we agree, right now) and nos pusimos de acuerdo (we came to an agreement — process, narrative past).
