uno

numeralCEFR A1High frequency

What does “uno” mean in English?

  1. one

Example sentences

  • Tengo uno.

    I have one.

  • Un libro y una mesa.

    A book and a table.

  • Uno, dos, tres.

    One, two, three.

How to use it

Uno is the cardinal number 'one'. Before a masculine singular noun it drops to un (un libro); before a feminine singular noun it becomes una (una mesa). Standalone, while counting, or after the noun it stays uno.

Common mistake

Don't say 'uno libro' before a masculine noun — drop to 'un'. The same word becomes 'una' before a feminine noun.
