How to use it

Contemporáneo/a means 'contemporary' — of the present time, or existing at the same time as something/someone else. Takes ser. Two senses: (1) present-day, modern: arte contemporáneo, la sociedad contemporánea, la literatura contemporánea; (2) coexisting in the same period: 'Cervantes fue contemporáneo de Shakespeare'. Collocations: el mundo contemporáneo, la cultura contemporánea, los debates contemporáneos. More formal than moderno or actual — preferred in academic and journalistic registers.

Common mistake

Contemporáneo (formal, literary or academic register) vs moderno (general: modern, up-to-date) vs actual (current: the current situation). In journalism and academic writing, contemporáneo is preferred for discussing present-day culture, thought, and challenges. Moderno can imply merely recent or fashionable. The historical coexistence sense ('X fue contemporáneo de Y') is unique to contemporáneo — don't use moderno or actual in this sense.
